John L. Spiegel is a distinguished attorney who has successfully represented clients in a wide variety of areas including surety and fidelity law, construction law, corporate law, environmental law, professional liability litigation and general civil litigation.

Mr. Spiegel has represented clients in a variety of cases, including the representation of sureties in defense and salvage matters; prime contractors in litigation and arbitration matters and before the Pennsylvania Board of Claims; subcontractors in litigation and arbitration; and materialmen, contractors and subcontractors in mechanics’ lien cases; civil litigation; and environmental matters. In addition, he has served and assisted clients as an expert witness in surety matters.

Mr. Spiegel graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1956, where he was a Member of the Board of Editors of the University of Pittsburgh Law Review. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Pittsburgh Law School Alumni Association from 1963 to 1969.

Mr. Spiegel served as an officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and later held the rank of Major while serving as the Wing Judge Advocate for the 171st Pennsylvania Air National Guard.

Mr. Spiegel is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the American Bar Association, where he is a member of the Surety and Fidelity Law Committee and the Forum on the Construction Industry. He is also a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel. He has appeared as a panelist for the American Bar Association Forum Committee and has served as monthly editor of several monthly surety newsletters. Mr. Spiegel is admitted to practice law in all Pennsylvania and West Virginia courts, the United States Courts of Appeal for the Third and Fourth Circuits, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia and the United States Tax Court.

Before joining Bentz Law Firm, P.C., Mr. Spiegel and his partner Jack W. Plowman had practiced together for thirty years in the law firm of Plowman & Spiegel, P.A. That firm was included in the Bar Registry of Preeminent Lawyers.
